Master Balloon Artist - Ed Chee

A master balloon artist and designer, Ed is one of the best in the industry and can create any style outfit.  He has been invited around the world to create his wearable balloon fashions, and has been called upon to judge balloon fashion shows for his expertise in weaving patterns and attention to detail.

A sampling of his work is reflected below.  In most cases, the works are commissioned.  It generally takes between 10-15 hours of actual hands-on work to create a single outfit, plus another 2-3 hours of planning and design time.  Each outfit is unique and is created specifically to fit an individual and an event theme.

If you are interested in standing out from the crowd in a unique, one-of-a-kind creation for your special event, contact Ed for details.

"Jenn"

Las Vegas 2009-08-17At DiamondJam 2009 (August 14-17, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada), Ed was one of four Master Designers on the Balloon Couture Runway show.  He created two pieces; one of which is shown here.

The theme of the night was to use a "Golden Era" movie as inspiration.  For this dress, Ed chose to do a modern twist on "The King and I".  The basic elements of the dress worn by Anna in the movie were a bustiere top, puffy sleeves, and an oversize hoop/bell skirt.  To modernize it, Ed shortened the bell skirt but retained a "puffy" look, and replaced the puffy sleeves with a more subtle - but still oversized - loops to simulate the where the puffy off-the-shoulder sleeves would normally be.  This dress is the first use of Ed's new puffy heart weave technique.

"Ireland"

Ireland, June 2009

Ed was invited to participate in the Street Performers World Championships in Dublin Ireland, and was asked to create a showpiece dress for the event.  According to organizers, this was the first balloon dress ever seen publicly in Ireland.

The ambiance of the event was a modern version of a miedieval jester's fair.  In keeping with this theme, this dress takes cues from a combination of harlequin, juggling, and gypsy elements.

Modelled by Stephanie Powers.

"Reflections Of Singapore"

Singapore, November 2008

Ed was invited to be a judge at the first Singapore Balloon Runway fashion show/competition, held at Downtown East mall.  Ed and fellow judge panelist Rie Hosokai also presented showcase dresses for the audience.

For this event, Ed chose to create a red and white version of the traditional chinese chung sum dress, reflecting his asian roots.  The red and white were reflective of the colors of Singapore.  This version of the dress was much more form-fitting than the previous version.  This was made possible by employing new techniques developed by Ed since the previous version in 2007.

"Singapore"

Singapore, July 2007

In Singapore, Ed was asked to create two showcase pieces for Explorer Kid in Downtown East.  He created a fun tree with animals, assisted by about 20 local twisters.  He also created a chinese-style "chong-sum" dress, modeled here by Ms. Jenny Wang.  The piece took approximately 12 hrs to complete and used a very complex 6-way weave to create the traditional form-fitting dress.

"Water"

Belgium.  June 2005

At the Millenium Jam in Mol, Belgium, Ed presented his first (in a series of four)  wearable balloon dress.  Each dress represents one the four elements - Water, Fire, Earth, Air.  "Water" is an asymmetric design with a "running water" weave and a skirt that reflects spraying water.

The dress is modeled by Ms. JoAnn Gray.

Body artwork was contributed by Ms. Lanna Maris.

"Fourth Of July"

Phoenix, July 2009

To promote the Miss Phoenix Chinese Pagent held on July 4, 2009, Ed created this dress to celebrate the US Independence Day celebration.  Hosted by the Chinese United Association of Greater Phoenix, the dress was on display during the all-day picnic leading up to the evening pagent.

In keeping with the Fourth-of-July celebrations, this dress was a blue bustiere top with a flared red-and-white striped skirt as an homage to the American flag.  The bustiere top and short skirt matches the youthful look of the model.

Modelled by Jaymie Yee.

"D-Lite"

Philippines, May 2009

Ed was invited to create 3 dresses for the filipino pop music group "D-Lite", to be worn during a performance of the popular variety show "ASAP 09".  The show was broadcast nationally on the ABS-CBN network and worldwide on the Filipino network (satellite/cable).

D-Lite is comprised of three well-known singers; Toni Gonzaga, Nikki Gil, and Karylle.  Toni's dress is a blue assymetrical, off-the-shoulder design.  Karylle's outfit is a pink and black short blouse and mini-skirt set, while Nikki sported a purple halter with a green flair mini skirt.

Local artists Jing and Charise assisted on this project.

Modelled by Toni Gonzaga, Karylle, and Nikki Gil.

"Las Vegas"

Las Vegas, August 2008

Ed was one of four master showcase artist at the Balloon Fashion Show held at the Orleans Convention Center in Las Vegas.  Each master artist was asked to create three outfits for the runway show.  In keeping with the flamboyance of Las Vegas, Ed created these unique outfits.

"Masquerade"

Belgium, June 2007

At the Millennium Jam in Mol, Belgium, Ed participated in the "Venetian Masquerade" balloon fashion show competition by creating these outfits.  While other competitors concentrated on a single outfit, Ed took the unique approach of creating a matching pair of costumes in the same timeframe.  "I felt that the origins of Venetian Masquerade was all about love... and the imagery I get is always of a couple at the masquerade event."

The only non-balloon elements in the photo are the wigs, female shoes, and feather in the male tricorn hat.  Assistance was provided by Shirley Ray, Michael Abrahamson, Shonna Flanigan, and Bubblz.  The winner was the deserving Ms. Rie Hosokai, but Ed certainly made an impact with his matching outfits and the unique techniques used to create these outfits.
